In this hands-on workshop, learn how to shear sheep the old-fashioned way with hand shears. Plus learn the basics of handling the fleeces including skirting & evaluation.
The workshop is for those with:
- an interest in learning how to hand shear their own small flock
- an interest in learning how to evaluate fleeces for handspinning and other wool arts
- an interest in producing and selling wool fleeces to wool artisans
The workshop includes:
- shearing demonstration & hands-on shearing practice
- hoof trimming demonstration & hands-on practice
- demonstration of fleece handling, skirting, and evaluation
- farm to table lunch from Lazuli Farms
- opportunity to purchase from the on-farm store (Lazuli Farms meats & local foods & artisanal products)
Your instructor for the workshop is Cheryl, The Wildfibre Shepherdess. Your practice flock for the workshop includes the Lazuli Farms flock of Navajo Churro, Mountain Welsh, and Icelandic sheep.

Lazuli Farms is located 1/2 mile off highway 833 just 10 minutes north of Camrose, Alberta. The farm is a short 45 minute drive from Edmonton & Sherwood Park. Approximately 1.75 hours from Red Deer and 3 hours from Calgary.

Do I need to bring my own sheep to the workshop?
No. You will be practicing your new skills on the Lazuli Farms flock. No need to have your own sheep nor bring them to the farm.
Do I need to bring my own shears and hoof trimmers?
Yes. You will need your own shears for the workshop. If you have hoof trimmers, please bring them as well.
Do I need any experience with sheep before I come?
No! This workshop is for small flock owners or enthusiasts. You do not need prior experience. You will be practicing shearing and hoof trimming on a sheep during the workshop.
Can I bring my dog to the farm?
No. Dogs and outside pets are not allowed to visit the farm. As a farm with multiple livestock, it is safer for all our furry friends to leave your pets at home.
Can I request a special meal since I have food intolerances?
Please let us know if you have any food allergies or intolerances when you book your spot. We will do our best to accommodate.
